Ravichandran Ashwin Reveals Why CSK Shouldn't Retain MS Dhoni As An Uncapped Player For IPL 2025

The excitement for the Indian Premier League 2025 mega-auctions is palpable as fans await to see how the retentions and team dynamics will be shaped. With BCCI expecting all the IPL franchises to submit a list of all the players they aim to retain by October 31st, the team owners are fully immersed in the crucial task of carefully curating a list of players that will significantly impact the future of their team.

Speaking on retentions, India's star all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin believes that Chennai Super Kings should not retain legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni as an uncapped player rather than a capped player.

Ashwin's Suggestion To CSK

In a video on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that Dhoni should not be considered an uncapped player despite not playing international cricket for five years. He said that instead of retaining him as an uncapped player and blocking a probable spot, CSK could very well retain him as a capped player alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, and Matheesha Pathirana. He also stated that CSK should opt for Sameer Rizvi as their sixth retention.

"I will give a fresh perspective. I will retain Rutu (Ruturaj), Jaddu (Ravindra), Dube, Pathirana and Dhoni. I will retain Dhoni as a normal capped player, not as an uncapped player. I’ll retain these five and will get Sameer Rizvi as my sixth retention," said Ashwin on his YouTube channel.

Chennai Super Kings In A Dilemma?

If CSK retains MS Dhoni as an uncapped player, they would only have to pay him a sum of Rs 4 crore. However, since Dhoni played his last international match in July 2019, the Chennai-based franchise also has the option to use the uncapped player rule, reintroduced by the BCCI for the IPL 2025 season.
