Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant put on a spirited display for Team India on Day 4 of the ongoing first Test against New Zealand at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Trailing by a significant margin, India needed a resilient partnership to keep their hopes alive, and the duo delivered a significant contribution with a well-crafted rear-guard action.

However, their fightback almost came to a disastrous end in the 56th over, when a miscommunication during a run led to a close run-out call.

Sarfaraz Khan And Rishabh Pant Get Involved In A Horrible Mix-Up

The incident occurred when Sarfaraz initially called for two runs, but Pant, recovering from a knee injury sustained on Day 2, hesitated while taking off for the second. Pant was nursing pain from the blow to his right knee, was slow off the blocks, and to make matters worse, was caught ball-watching.

At the non-striker’s end, Sarfaraz could be seen frantically waving, gesturing, and even jumping in an effort to stop Pant from attempting the second run. The situation became so tense that former India coach Ravi Shastri, who was on commentary at the time, remarked that Sarfaraz was doing a 'rain dance' to get Pant’s attention.

Luckily for Rohit Sharma and Co, New Zealand wicketkeeper Tom Blundell failed to gather the ball cleanly and missed the run-out opportunity. Pant made it back to his crease by a whisker, avoiding what could have been a disastrous dismissal. The mix-up left Sarfaraz visibly frustrated, and he later revealed the tense moment in a post-match interview.

"Rishabh had taken a blow on his knee, so we had already discussed that we would be cautious while running between the wickets. I had initially called for two runs, but then I remembered he was struggling with knee pain. Thank God he survived that—it could have been a game-changing run-out."Sarfaraz explained.

Pant was substituted on Day 2 by Dhruv Jurel, but in a major boost for India, the wicketkeeper-batter returned to training and resumed his place on Day 4. His gritty knock, coupled with Sarfaraz Khan’s maiden Test century, helped stabilize India’s innings as they tried to bridge the gap with New Zealand’s first-innings total.
