On Sunday, October 20, Sri Lanka will lock horns against West Indies for the 1st of a three-match ODI series at the Pallekele International Stadium.

The two teams recently met for a T20I series, where the hosts lost the opening match but bounced back to win back-to-back games and clinch the series. Despite the defeat, the Windies are now accustomed to the climate and conditions. Thus, they would look to give a tough fight. This article will shed light on the preview, pitch report, and playing XI of the upcoming Sri Lanka-West Indies 1st ODI.

Team Previews

Sri Lanka

Talking about the hosts, Charith Asalanka will lead the side. Most of the players are identical to the ones featured in the T20Is. Further, the Lankans are looking to replicate their heroics against India in July 2024 after they beat the Men in Blue in an ODI series after two decades.

Further, the Island Nation have named a spin-dominant squad, as the spinners were the stars against India.

Wanindu Hasaranga, who made his return from injury, will lead a strong spin attack that has the likes of Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, and Dunith Wellalage in the mix, with several part-time options also available.

West Indies

West Indies have major changes in their squad from the T20Is, including the captain. While Rovman Powell led the Windies in the shortest format of the match, Shai Hope will captain the Men in Maroon in the upcoming ODIs and also keep the wickets.

Eyes would be on Gudakesh Motie, who did well in the CPL 2024 and is West Indies' premier spinner. Hayden Walsh Jr is another spinner that West Indies have gone with, but compared to Sri Lanka, they are relying more on their spinners despite the Pallekele strip being a rank-turner.

SL vs WI 1st ODI: Pallekele Stadium Pitch Report

Pallekele International Cricket Stadium is expected to help the spinners and ball will come slow onto the bat. As seen in the T20is, spinners will be dominant here. The new ball might be easier to hit, but as the match progresses, the pitch will help the spinners. Thus, batting first would be a good choice.

SL vs WI 1st ODI: Winner's Prediction

Sri Lanka are the favourites to win the first ODI as it is their home, and they a line-up dominated by spinners, who would have an upper hand at the Pallekele Stadium.
