In the ongoing first Test between India and New Zealand at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, star India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant missed the opportunity to smash his 7th Test hundred as he fell on 99 and missed the milestone by a solitary run.

Pant, who came to bat on day 4 of the first Test, played a valuable knock and amassed 99 (105) which featured nine fours and five sixes. On the first ball of the 89th over, William Rourkee rattled Pant's stumps and sent him back to the pavilion. It is worth noting that, Pant missed the opportunity to surpass MS Dhoni to have the most Test centuries by an Indian wicket-keeper.

Rishabh Pant Shine Despite Knee Injury

It will go down in history as one of the finest Test knocks as Pant suffered an injury scare on day two after the ball hit his knee while keeping wickets for the hosts. He limped off the field and did not even keep wickets on day 3. Nonetheless, he gave a glimpse of hope to the fans after he came to bat during the tea break on day 3.

Pant was out of action for nearly two years following a fatal car crash on December 30, 2022. He made a return to the Test side against Bangladesh in the recently concluded Test series and smashed a century on his return.

Pant  Eyes To Join De Villiers And Sangakkara In Elite List

Had Pant scored his seventh Test century, he would have joined an elite list of Ab de Villiers and Kumar Sangakkara, who also have seven Test centuries. Overall, Adam Gilchrist holds the record for most centuries in red-ball cricket. (17)

Talking about the ongoing match, Pant came to bat when India were 231/3. He stitched a 177-run stand for the fourth wicket with Sarfaraz Khan, who too smashed a century. Notably, India are 434/5 after 89 overs.
