In a candid reflection on England's batting mainstay Joe Root, former England captain Michael Vaughan has singled out Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah as the only currently active bowler who truly challenges the Yorkshire batter.

This comes as Joe Root surpasses Sir Alastair Cook to become England’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket during the third day of the ongoing Test against Pakistan in Multan.

The milestone follows his achievement earlier in England’s home summer, when Joe Root became only the second English batter to cross the 12,000-run mark in Test cricket.

Michael Vaughan Praises Jasprit Bumrah's Caliber

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, Vaughan shared insights into what sets Jasprit Bumrah apart as a bowler who can trouble even a batter of Joe Root’s caliber.

"The only bowler he does not quite line up is Jasprit Bumrah, I reckon, but who does? He will already be working on that and thinking about how to manage him next summer. At the moment, bowlers are waiting for him to make a mistake. There is still plenty for him to tick off, including that missing hundred in Australia. But I watch him bat in Australia and do not see a major technical problem, he just has not cracked three figures yet."

Jasprit Bumrah has, in fact, emerged as a thorn in Root’s batting. He has dismissed the England right-hander nine times across 24 innings, with his prowess particularly evident during the recent home series in England.

As for Root’s general approach, Vaughan believes that many bowlers today are waiting for him to make a mistake, rather than actively searching for weaknesses in his technique. This speaks volumes about Root’s reliability and batting prowess as he anchors England’s Test lineup.
