On this day in 2023, Rohit Sharma etched his name in the history books as he surpassed the great Sachin Tendulkar to register the most hundreds in ODI World Cup history. Sachin had 6 World Dup hundreds, and Rohit went past him with a breezy knock Vs Afghanistan.

Rohit had a disastrous game against Australia in India's tournament opener, as the skipper was dismissed for a duck. Ahead of the Afghanistan clash in Delhi, Rohit had a point to prove and he did that with a stellar century to seal India's victory in some style.

Afghanistan post a healthy  272 on the board

Afghanistan batted first and posted a healthy 272 on the board. On a flat track, suited for the batters, almost all the top order batter contributed to frustrate the Indian bowlers.

However, there were two who stood out the most - Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai. Shahidi played a captain's knock and scored a brisk 80 off 88. He was well accompanied by Omarzai, who slammed 62 to take the Afghan side to a competitive total.

Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers for India, picking up 4 for 39 as Indian batters were set a challenging total.

Rohit masterclass seals the win for India

R0-Ball was at his finest as skipper Rohit came out with a mission to score big, which he did. He was at his attacking best right from the word go and took on the Afghan attack with ease. It was almost as if he was playing a T20 game, as he had a strike-rate of nearly 156.

Rohit spared no one as he achieved a sensational hundred and in the process went past Sachin Tendulkar to score the most hundreds in ODI World Cups (7). His innings was laced with 16 fours and 5 sixes.

Virat Kohli, the local boy turned out to be the finisher for India on that day, as he remained unbeaten at 55 and steered India past the winning line.
