Juned Khan's journey to making his debut for Mumbai in the Irani Cup 2024 is nothing short of a fairytale. Hailing from Kannauj, the fast bowler moved to Mumbai to support his family, initially working in a garment factory and later driving an auto rickshaw despite being a minor.

Cricket seemed a distant dream until fate brought him to the Sanjeevani Cricket Academy, run by former Mumbai wicketkeeper Manish Bangera. Despite his limited experience with leather-ball cricket, Bangera noticed his potential and encouraged him to keep bowling.

However, Juned faced significant challenges, including a lack of resources to buy proper cricket gear like spikes. Fortunately, with the support of well-wishers and mentors, he continued his journey through local tournaments.

A turning point came when Juned Khan was spotted by Abhishek Nayar, India's assistant coach and former assistant coach of KKR, while playing in the Police Shield Tournament for PJ Hindu Gymkhana.

His performances in the Buchi Babu and KSCA tournaments further cemented his reputation, leading to his selection for Mumbai in the prestigious Irani Cup.

In his debut, Juned Khan took the prized wicket of Ruturaj Gaikwad, marking a perfect start to his professional cricket career. The pacer had trouble sleeping when he was told about his debut and the wicket of Gaikwad was a big bonus as just donning the Mumbai shirt was a dream for Juned.

“I couldn't sleep at all ever since I was told on the match eve that I will be playing my first match for Mumbai, that too in the Irani Cup. The wicket was a bonus. Just to find myself here is like a dream in itself," Juned told Sportstar.

Having said that, Juned Khan's debut in the Irani Cup is just the beginning, and he is determined to make the most of his opportunity.

Mumbai to be felicitated for winning Irani Cup 2024

The Ajinkya Rahane-led Mumbai cricket team is set to be felicitated by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) at the iconic Wankhede Stadium following their historic Irani Cup victory after a 27-year hiatus.

Mumbai showcased their dominance over the Rest of India (ROI), taking a crucial first-innings lead of 121 runs. All-rounder Tanush Kotian's century in the second innings further solidified Mumbai's control, setting ROI a challenging target of 450 runs. Despite a valiant effort by ROI captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, who scored 191, Mumbai clinched the title.
