ICC Women's T20 World 2024 kicked off on October 3rd, with teams vying not only for wins but also for points and a superior Net Run Rate (NRR) to secure a spot in the knockout stage. The NRR plays a crucial role in deciding which teams advance, especially when teams are tied on points after playing four group matches.

For the 2024 edition of the Women's T20 World Cup, 10 teams are divided into two groups. Due to the limited number of group stage games, there's a high possibility that multiple teams finish with the same points. 

What is NRR? How is it computed?

In such a scenario, Net Run Rate (NRR) comes into play as a deciding factor. NRR reflects how dominant a team has been throughout the tournament by comparing runs scored and runs conceded. 

It's calculated using the following formula: NRR=(Run Rate For)−(Run Rate Against). Run Rate is for runs scored by the team or overs faced, whereas Run Rate against stands for runs conceded by the team or overs bowled.

Notably, in rain-affected matches, the DLS method is used to calculate adjusted targets. When calculating NRR in such cases, adjustments are made to ensure fairness.

As in any tournament, NRR will be critical in the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup, especially when teams are level on points, making it a vital metric in determining who advances to the knockout rounds.

How can India qualify for the semi-finals?

With a crucial win over Pakistan, India women team have managed to stay alive in the Women's T20 World Cup. India now faces two more group-stage matches, first against Asian champions Sri Lanka and then against the defending World Cup champions Australia.

To secure a spot in the semi-finals, India needs to win both remaining group games. With these victories, they can reach six points. If all three teams (India, Australia, and New Zealand) finish with six points, the Net Run Rate (NRR) will come into play to determine which two teams advance. Currently, India stands at -1.217 NRR, which is tough to recover.
