After a couple of low scores in the domestic circuit, Shreyas Iyer bounced back in style with a terrific century for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25. Interestingly, this was after 3-years that Iyer has scored a ton in first-class cricket.

Playing for Mumbai against a strong Maharashtra side, Iyer came into bat at number 5 after the dismissal of captain Ajinkya Rahane. He paired up with young opener Ayush Mhatre and stitched a 200-run partnership to steer Mumbai to a strong position on Day 2.

Iyer scores brilliant ton under pressure

The duo added crucial runs and have taken Mumbai to a strong position against the Maharashtra side. Maharashtra were bundled out for a paltry 126 in their first innings, and in reply, Mumbai lost three early wickets when Iyer decided to step up.

He was at his attacking best and played some gorgeous strokes to push the opposition on the back-foot. While Mhatre was knocked over for a brilliant 176, Shreyas Iyer continued the good work and reached his century in 131 balls.

Eventually after some good work, Iyer was dismissed for a well-compiled 142 off 190 balls, laced with 12 fours and 4 sixes. Meanwhile, he also crossed 6,000 run mark in first-class cricket, a milestone to be proud of.

Iyer eyeing India comeback

The century was a much-needed one for Iyer, who has been out of the Indian side for a considerable period of time. His central contract was snatched by BCCI, as the selectors wanted Iyer to concentrate on domestic cricket to improve his fitness level.

Iyer struggled for form in the domestic circuit in 2024. In 6 Duleep Trophy matches, Iyer slammed only 154 runs in six innings, including two half centuries and two ducks.

This knock from Iyer is a timely reminder to the selectors that the Mumbai batter is back in form and should be under consideration, at-least in white-ball cricket.
