Stylish Indian batter Ruturaj Gaikwad had an outstanding start to this year's Ranji Trophy season, amassing a glorious fifty for Maharashtra in their tournament opener against Jammu and Kashmir. Coming at number four, Gaikwad struck a magnificent 130-ball 86 before being dismissed by Yudhvir Singh.

J&K Get A Stupendous Start Before Gaikwad's Majestic Knock Scripts Maharashtra's Comeback

After posting a mammoth 519-run total, thanks to Shubham Khajuria's stunning double century, Jammu and Kashmir pushed Maharashtra onto the back foot with a couple of early blows. Delhi Capitals' emerging IPL star Rasikh Salam emerged as J&K's wrecker-in-chief with the ball, castling Murtaza Trunkwala and Sachin Dhas in quick succession.

However, Maharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad spoiled the home team's party, scripting his side's remarkable comeback with a valiant innings. The experienced right-handed batter stitched a priceless 175-run stand with opening batter Siddhesh Veer, helping Maharashtra breach the 200-run mark without further hiccup.

Unfortunately, Gaikwad missed out on a well-deserved ton, with Yudhvir Singh cleaning him up for 86 runs. Although he couldn't bring up his century, Gaikwad received massive applause for his knock, including thirteen gorgeous boundaries.

Will Gaikwad Be Picked For Australia Tour?

Hailed for his batting exploits in the IPL, Ruturaj Gaikwad has recently enjoyed stellar success in red-ball cricket. He was India C's most successful batter in the Duleep Trophy, amassing 232 runs at an impressive average of 38.66. He also grabbed the limelight with his inspirational captaincy, leading the C-team to the final.

So, considering his recent on-field success, India might bring Gaikwad in as the third opener for their upcoming Australia tour. If reports are to be believed, India's regular skipper Rohit Sharma might miss the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy clash for personal reasons. In such a scenario, the Indian selectors must be keeping an eye on Gaikwad, whose impressive Ranji Trophy run might earn him his maiden Test cap in Perth.
