On Wednesday, October 9, India women registered an emphatic 82-run win over Sri Lanka women in the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup 2024 match. It was a do-or-die game for both teams, and the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side was the better team.

India women, batting first, rode on Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana's fifties and put 172 runs on the board. In reply, Sri Lanka women tumbled for just 90 runs. With the defeat, Sri Lanka have officially crashed out of the tournament, while India climbed to the second spot.

This article will shed light on how India women can qualify for the semi-finals.

India's Qualification Scenario Explained

At present, India is on 2nd spot with four points in three matches. The Women in Blue suffered an embarrassing defeat against New Zealand and then came on to beat Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side have just one more game left in the group stage and enjoy a net run rate of +0.576.

If India Beat Australia

If India beat Australia, it will take them to six points. However, they must hope that the Alyssa Healy-led side beat Pakistan women in their next match so that the maximum number of points they can clinch is four. Further, New Zealand can also reach six points, but India currently have a better net-run rate than the White Ferns, so the only thing they want to concentrate on is beating Australia in their last group-stage match.

If India loses to Australia

In case India lose to Australia, they will finish with four points and have to rely on other scenarios to make a case for themselves to reach the semis. Firstly, even in case of a defeat, it shouldn't be bad so that the net run-rate does not suffer heavily.

Further, India would pray for Sri Lanka to beat New Zealand in their last match and for Pakistan to lose to Australia. Further, they would pray that winner of the Pakistan-New Zealand match should not go above India in net-run rate.
