The much-awaited Women's T20 World Cup 2024 match between India women and Sri Lanka women is underway at the Dubai International Stadium in UAE. Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss, and India women elected to bat first.

The decision turned out to be a masterstroke as Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana stitched a 98-runs stand for the first wicket. Smriti Mandhana stitched a fifty, while Verma missed out on her fifty by just seven runs. Nonetheless, her innings featured four boundaries.

Shafali Verma Surpasses Smriti Mandhana

Talking about Shafali, she scripted history as she completed 2000 T20I runs and also became the youngest cricketer to reach this milestone. Shafali scripted this feat at the age of 20 years and 255 days. She broke the record held by Gaby Lewis, who was 23 years and 35 days old when she completed 2000 runs in T20I cricket.

Notably, Varma is also the second-fastest Indian to reach 2000 T20I runs, as she achieved the feat in just 83 innings. Notably, Mithali Raj is the fastest as she took just 70 innings to reach this feat.  Verma went past Smriti Mandhana, who has now moved to 3rd on the list and took 84 innings to complete her 2000 T20I runs.

Shafali Verma's Tournament So Far

India are not having a great tournament so far, as they lost their opening match against New Zealand because of Verma's failure with the bat. The team bounced back against Pakistan, where Verma played a crucial 32-run knock. So Far, Verma has amassed 76 runs in three innings and averages 38. She has been striking the ball at 98.70.

At the time of writing this article, India are 116/2 after 16.4 overs. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues are present at the crease.
