India’s hopes of advancing to the Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals took a severe blow following a narrow 9-run defeat to Australia in Sharjah on October 13. The loss leaves India dependent on external results for a chance to progress, with captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressing frustration over the lack of collective effort from her side.

Harmanpreet Kaur Express Frustration After India's Loss

Talking in the post-match presentation, Harmanpreet Kaur pointed to Australia’s cohesive performance as a stark contrast to India’s reliance on individual contributions.

"I think their entire team contributes, they don't depend on one or two players, they have a lot of all-rounders who contribute...They have a batter who can take the target of power play. They don't have anything fixed. According to pitch, according to situation they can make a plan and play," Harmanpreet said.

It is important to note that, Australia, despite dealing with injury setbacks, managed to post a competitive total of 151. India’s bowlers performed commendable to contain the formidable Australian batting unit . However, the Indian batting order struggled to build momentum, as partnerships failed to flourish, leaving Harmanpreet with little support during the chase.

Harmanpreet was a standout with the bat, as she scored unbeaten on 54 off 47 balls, while Deepti Sharma added 20 off 25. Still, no other player managed to contribute significantly. In the final over, with India needing 14 runs to win, a flurry of wickets left Harmanpreet alone at the non-striker’s end.

This series of quick dismissals underscored India’s lack of depth in the batting lineup, which Harmanpreet indirectly pointed to in her critique of the team’s performance.

"They didn't give away easy runs and made it difficult. They are an experienced side...It was a chaseable total. When me and Deepti were batting, we couldn't hit a few loose balls. We can learn a lot from Australia. Whatever was in our hands, we were trying to do that but that's something not in our control. If we had an opportunity to play another game, it would have been great. Whoever plays well will deserve to be there," Harmanpreet added.

This loss leaves India’s World Cup future uncertain, as they now depend on Pakistan to defeat New Zealand to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
