Australia's star allrounder Cameron Green has made a challenging decision to undergo surgery on his back, effectively ruling him out of the much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India this summer. The 25-year-old, regarded as one of Australia's most promising talents in recent years, was left with no choice after scans revealed a rare defect aggravating a stress fracture in his back, forcing him to prioritize his long-term health over immediate returns.

Surgery Ends Cameron Green’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy Hopes

The setback doesn't just affect Green’s Test season; with a lengthy six-month recovery period, it also raises questions about his availability for Australia’s upcoming tours, the ICC Champions Trophy, and even the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Green, who reported lower back pain during Australia’s UK tour in September, received grim news following scans. While stress fractures are not out of the ordinary for fast bowlers, Cricket Australia disclosed that Green’s case was a tad different—a unique defect in an adjacent area appeared to worsen the injury, creating a ticking time bomb in his back.

Specialists advised that surgery would be the best route to resolve the issue and prevent future recurrences. In making this decision, Cameron Green has chosen the same path taken by other quicks such as James Pattinson, Jason Behrendorff, and India's Jasprit Bumrah, who all underwent surgery to stabilize vertebrae and extend their careers.

Green’s Absence Leaves a Gap as Steve Smith Likely To Return to No.4

This new development has Australia’s selectors in a spin. Green’s absence opens a slot in the lineup, with Steve Smith possibly shifting back to No.4, a position he once made his own.

Additionally, finding a replacement for the valuable overs Green contributed will be no walk in the park, especially given Mitch Marsh’s recent limited bowling outings both domestically and internationally.

Between Tough Choices, Green Prioritizes Longevity

Green’s rapid rise in international cricket has been proof of his skill and adaptability, yet this surgery is the first major stumbling block in his career since his international debut in 2020. The young allrounder previously battled back stress fractures as a teenager but had managed to stay injury-free over recent years, becoming a central figure in Australia’s plans across all formats.

Adding to his physical challenges, Green also contends with a chronic kidney condition, which he carefully manages to avoid dehydration and severe cramps. His meticulous approach to fitness and health has thus far kept him on the field, making this setback all the more disappointing for the rising star and Australian fans alike.

With six months of recovery on the cards, Cameron Green will be sorely missed not only for his batting brilliance but also for the bowling depth he brings to the Australian team. The "Green Machine" may be sidelined for now, but fans will hope to see him come back stronger and steadier.
