It was all going smooth for Yashasvi Jaiswal until a blink-and-you-miss mix-up threw a spanner in the works. The young southpaw, who had fans on their feet after his majestic 173* on Day 1, was dismissed on 175 on the second morning of the Delhi Test and not by a bowler, but by a classic case of ‘yes-no-yes-no’ confusion with Shubman Gill.

As the crowd sighed in disbelief, Jaiswal walked back with a disappointed look. Now, India’s vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja has opened up about the whole incident, calling it a “simple misunderstanding” that happens in the game.

Jadeja clears the air

Jadeja, speaking at stumps on Day 2, didn’t throw anyone under the bus. The all-rounder explained that it was just one of those on-field mix-ups that every cricketer goes through.

“No, there was nothing special. There was a misunderstanding, yes, no, yes, no, and a non-striker feels that there is no run; a striker feels that there is a run, so it goes on like that. There is nothing much, at the end of the day, it is a part of the game, it keeps happening. Thank God, we were in a good situation, even after that, the whole team was there and scored a big score,” Jadeja said.

Jaiswal takes it on the chin

Even Yashasvi Jaiswal himself didn’t make a fuss. The youngster, known for his calmness, brushed it off with maturity beyond his years.

“It's (run out) part of the game, so it's fine,” he said with a smile.

For someone who had just played an innings full of grace and grit, that is quite a statement. The 23-year-old started slow on Day 1, biding his time before switching gears in the second session, reaching his half-century in 82 balls and then racing to his seventh Test hundred with a flurry of crisp boundaries.

Jadeja lauds Jaiswal’s batting smarts

Jadeja couldn’t help but heap praise on the left-hander’s game awareness and maturity, calling him “clever” and “smart” in how he constructs his innings.

“Jaiswal is very clever in terms of his batting; he knows which bowler to attack, which bowler to play and take out, so I think his maturity level is very good. He doesn't try to hit every bowler, he has a very good idea of which situation to hit, which time to hit, so I think it's a good thing that when a batsman knows what shot he is going to play, when he is going to play, it stays in his mind and brings success,” Jadeja added.

IND vs WI live score update

After Jaiswal’s marathon knock, India piled up a mammoth 518/5 before declaring. West Indies, who resumed Day 3 at 140/4 have been reduced to 182/8 at the time of writing this article. The visitors are still trailing by 336 runs and India will aim to bowl them out and enforce follow on.
