Bangladesh crashed to a huge seven-wicket defeat to India in Gwalior to concede an early lead in their three-match T20I series. After getting invited to bat first, Bangladesh batters were bundled out for just 127 in 19.5 overs, with Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s mere 35-run effort turning out to be the biggest benefactor of their low-scoring innings.

While speaking at the post-match press conference, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed his displeasure over his team’s lacklustre batting performance, and also took a dig at the bowler-friendly playing surfaces back home.

Shanto blames home wickets, skills for inability to get 180

During the press conference, Najmul Hossain Shanto said:

“I would not say we played badly. We are a better team than this. We have not done well in this format for a long time, but I do not believe we are such a bad team.”

The Bangladesh captain also added that his team has the capacity but there is still room for improvement in the batting department. The cricketer additionally cited the slower playing wickets back home as the reason behind batter’s inability of notching up 180-plus totals in T20I cricket. He added:

“We have the ability, but we have room for improvement in our skills. We have been batting in this way for the last ten years. Sometimes we do well. We have to make some changes, perhaps where we practice back home. We play on 140-150 wickets at home. Our batters do not know how to score 180 runs. I would not blame just the wickets, but we have to consider skills and mentality.”

As the action panned out in Gwalior, Bangladesh batters managed to score just 127 upfront, as they struggled to overcome Indian seamer Arshdeep Singh (3-14) and spinner Varun Chakravarthy (3-31). Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto himself struck a near run-a-ball 27 while unbeaten Mehidy Hasan Miraz made 35* to top-score in the innings.

Later in the Indian run-chase, Hardik Pandya walloped 39* from just 16 balls with five boundaries and two sixes to steer the hosts past the finishing line with seven wickets and more than eight overs to spare.

Bangladesh will now face India in a must-win second T20I match at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in New Delhi on October 9. The action will commence from 7:00 PM IST onwards.
