Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) leg-spinner Digvesh Singh Rathi has become one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the IPL 2025. He has been in the limelight not only for his promising performances, but also for his unique and controversial wicket celebration.

Digvesh Rathi's Controversial 'Notebook Celebration'

It all started during LSG’s clash against Punjab Kings, when Digvesh dismissed Priyansh Arya. Following the dismissal, the young spinner walked close to Arya and theatrically scribbled on his palm as if recording the batter’s name.

The celebration did not sit well with the on-field umpire, who immediately intervened and reprimanded Digvesh for this act. The BCCI later imposed a fine and handed him a demerit point for breaching the IPL code of conduct.

Just days later, in a match against MI, Digvesh once again brought out the same celebration after removing Naman Dhir. This time, a bigger fine followed. But rather than abandon the gesture, Digvesh adapted.

In LSG’s encounter with KKR, after dismissing Sunil Narine, the leggie once again mimed the notebook gesture but this time, he scribbled on the turf instead of his palm.

Real Reason Behind Digvesh Rathi's 'Notebook' Celebration

Despite the controversies, Digvesh’s family has defended his intentions behind the celebration. His elder brother, Sunny Singh, spoke to The Indian Express and shed light on what the celebration really means to the young cricketer.

“I did ask Digvesh about it. He told me it motivates him," Sunny told The Indian Express. “I said, ‘okay, if that helps you play better, fine, but don’t disrespect any player’. He’s not doing it to attract attention. He was not even on social media till recently… wouldn’t even update his WhatsApp status. He would say, ‘what is the point of status update, when you don’t have status’?"

Before making his IPL debut, he played for South Delhi Superstarz in the inaugural season of the DPL. His consistent performances earned him a spot in the IPL when LSG picked him at his base price of Rs 30 lakh during the mega auction.
