The 22-year-old all-rounder expressed his deep grief while also thanking fans, teammates, and well-wishers for their love and support during this heartbreaking time.

Wellalage’s father tragically suffered a heart attack on September 18, just hours after Sri Lanka’s six-wicket win over Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi.

Dunith Wellalage pens emotional goodbye to late father

The young cricketer was informed of the devastating news by team manager Mahinda Halangoda and head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, in an emotional moment that has since gone viral online.

Taking to social media, Dunith Wellalage poured his heart out, thanking the team and fans for their support. He extended his gratitude to Sri Lanka Cricket, his sponsors, medical staff, and his former schools and clubs for standing by his family. The young cricketer ended his note with a promise to carry forward his late father’s dream.

After completing funeral rites, Dunith Wellalage rejoined the national squad and played in Sri Lanka’s Super Four match against Bangladesh, which they lost. The islanders now face Pakistan in their next big clash.

Wellalage has so far played 2 games in the Asia Cup 2025, bowling 8 overs and conceding 85 runs with 1 wicket.
