As India gear up to face New Zealand in the first Test at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, starting on October 16, skipper Rohit Sharma spoke candidly in the pre-match press conference. Alongside discussing Jasprit Bumrah’s new role as vice-captain, Rohit reflected on his partnership with young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, a rising star in Indian cricket.

Rohit and Yashasvi first opened together during India’s tour of the West Indies last year. From that moment, their chemistry at the top of the order clicked, making them India’s go-to opening pair in Test cricket. Since then, Rohit Sharma has not only shared the crease with Jaiswal but also taken the role of a mentor, guiding the 21-year-old through the highs and challenges of international cricket.

At the press conference on October 15, Rohit was all praise for his young partner. 

“He’s a real talent. He’s got the game to perform in all sorts of conditions. It’s still early days, so it’s hard to judge him fully, but he’s shown all the right signs. He’s worked his way through the system, and that’s why he’s here, playing for India,” Rohit said, hinting at the potential Jaiswal brings to the team.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Impressive Test Journey

Jaiswal has emerged as one of the brightest talents in Indian cricket. He is known for his explosive batting in the shorter formats. He quickly transitioned into a reliable Test batter. Since making his debut last year, Jaiswal has been in phenomenal form. He impressed in the England series earlier this year and followed it up with a solid showing against Bangladesh.

In just 20 Test innings, Jaiswal has accumulated 1,217 runs, including three centuries and five half-centuries, with an impressive average of 64.05. His hunger for runs and ability to adapt to different conditions make him a valuable asset for India’s long-term plans in red-ball cricket.
