Former India captain Anil Kumble believes young South African Dewald Brevis could be the next big star for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL. Speaking on JioHotstar, Kumble praised Brevis for his skills, temperament, and ability to handle tough conditions.
Brevis wasn’t even in the original CSK squad. He joined as an injury replacement mid-season and made an immediate impact. In his first game against SRH, he scored 42 off just 25 balls.
While CSK may not make it to the playoffs this IPL 2025 season, Anil Kumble believes Brevis is the superstar the franchise perhaps needs to ensure their long-term future.
Anil Kumble Speaks Highly Of Dewald Brevis
After Dewald Brevis’ successful debut for CSK, former Indian cricketer and coach Anil Kumble lauded him for handling the tough conditions of Chepauk.
Kumble also pointed out that Brevis has done well at the U19 level and in South African first-class cricket, showing he’s been ready for big challenges for a while. He believes CSK can build a strong young core with Brevis, Rachin Ravindra, Sameer Rizvi Mhatre, and Matheesha Pathirana.
“His ability to play spin really stood out. In Chennai, it isn’t easy. It’s a two-paced wicket where the odd ball holds up. He’s done it before in South Africa, in first-class cricket, and at the U-19 level, which is how he came into the IPL. Brevis has all the shots. With Rachin Ravindra, Mhatre, and Pathirana, CSK has a young core to build on. Brevis has the potential to be a long-term asset for the franchise," Kumble said.
It’s clear that in Dewald Brevis, CSK might have found a future superstar, someone who could help the team bounce back stronger in the coming years.
MS Dhoni Blames Chepauk Pitch For CSK’s Struggles In IPL 2025
Chennai Super Kings’ stand-in captain, MS Dhoni, has pointed to the Chepauk pitch as one of the major reasons for the team's struggles this IPL season. Back in the day, Chepauk was known as CSK’s fortress. Their bowlers, particularly the spinners, flourished on the slow, turning pitches.
However, Dhoni feels that after the relaying of the pitch, the conditions have changed a lot. The ball does not grip as much, and the pitch has become unpredictable, making it more difficult for CSK to rule at home.
