In the recently concluded Women's T20 World Cup clash between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, Suzie Bates, New Zealand opener was dismissed early as she managed to score mere 17 runs off 22 balls. The wicket came in the 8th over of New Zealand's innings, as the White Ferns chased Sri Lanka’s score of 115.

The incident occurred in the 8th over, when Nisansala’s executed a beautiful delivery, a fuller-length arm ball pitched directly on the stumps. Bates, aiming to drive it across the line, found herself misjudging the pace and line of the delivery. 

The ball zipped past her bat, and crashed into the stumps and that left Suzie Bates visibly frustrated. This critical dismissal broke New Zealand’s solid opening stand, as she departed for a steady start that could have paved the way for a comfortable chase.

New Zealand Bowlers Restricts Sri Lanka To A Low Total

The wicket was a morale booster for Sri Lanka, who had put up a respectable 115/5 earlier in the day. After winning the toss, Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu opted to bat first. 

Sri Lanka crossed the 100-run mark for the first time in the tournament, led by a solid 35 off 41 from Athapaththu, partnered by Harshitha Madavi Samarawickrama, who contributed 18 off 29. Although both batters showed promise, they struggled to increase the run rate, and their departure exposed the middle order.

The Lankan innings appeared on track for a substantial total until Amelia Kerr turned the tide in the 14th over with a beautifully flighted delivery to bowl Athapaththu out. From that point, the team lost momentum, and lost wickets at regular intervals. Nilakshi de Silva’s quick 14* off 11 and Ama Kanchana’s 10* off 9 in the final overs added vital runs to push the score past 110.

At the time of writing New Zealand Women have won the match by 4 wickets.
