Known for their unpredictability, Pakistan have built a reputation for thrilling highs and perplexing lows. On one day, they are a force to be reckoned with, capable of outplaying the best, while on another, they stumble in a way that leaves fans shaking their heads. Day 3 of the first Test against England in Multan provided another chapter to this story, as a premature review exposed Pakistan’s impulsive side yet again.

Pakistan’s Review Gone Wrong as Jamal and Shan Masood Miss by a Mile

With England sitting comfortably at 193/2, Aamir Jamal steamed in for the 39th over, hoping to break the solid partnership between Ben Duckett and Joe Root. Jamal, bowling from around the wicket, delivered a good-length ball that angled in sharply. Duckett, looking to defend, was beaten as the ball nipped away.

Convinced he had his man, Jamal broke into an impassioned appeal, hands raised and eyes pleading for an answer as the umpire denied his appeal. His enthusiasm was contagious; even though Rizwan looked uncertain, the young bowler’s conviction swayed captain Shan Masood to opt for the review.

The decision to challenge the on-field call seemed to stem from Jamal’s excitement rather than hard evidence. As the UltraEdge replay revealed a clear gap between bat and ball, the reality of a misstep sunk in for Pakistan.

The review was lost, and the on-field umpire’s decision remained intact — Duckett was still standing strong at the crease.

Duckett and Root Hold Firm For England

The beneficiaries of Pakistan’s error, Ben Duckett and Joe Root, capitalized on the reprieve and continued to strengthen England’s position, helping them reach 199/2 after 39 overs.

Duckett, who has reached a smooth 59 off 53 balls, was unfazed by the noise around him. Root, at 61 off 95 balls, looks equally composed, cementing England’s hopes of hunting down Pakistan’s formidable first-innings total of 556.

Shaheen Afridi’s Sparkling Start

Earlier in the day, Pakistan found their initial breakthrough in the form of Shaheen Afridi, whose early dismissal of Zak Crawley for 78 was the boost Pakistan needed. However, the joy was short-lived as Duckett and Root took charge, thwarting Pakistan’s attempts to dismantle England’s batting lineup.

At the time of writing this article, despite trailing by a significant 357 runs, the pitch seems a highway for batters, and England’s batsmen look well-set to bridge the gap, potentially even surpassing Pakistan’s total.
