England’s left-arm spinner Jack Leach wasted no time on Day 5 of the first Test, as he striked the early wicket of Pakistan’s set batter Agha Salman. Leach’s timely breakthrough has put England in a commanding position as they look to wrap up the match against Pakistan at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

Resuming the day with Pakistan struggling to stay afloat, Salman, who had shown some resilience, was trapped in front of the stumps by Leach in the 49th over. Salman’s partnership with Aamir Jamal had been crucial for Pakistan, as they added 109 runs and helped reduce the deficit. However, Leach’s accurate delivery left little room for error and brought England closer to a well-deserved victory.

Jack Leach Provides Early Breakthrough

Bowling at a steady pace, Jack Leach delivered a flighted ball on the stumps. The delivery straightened after pitching, and Salman, attempting to defend it, was beaten on the inside edge. The ball struck Salman on his front pad, prompting an immediate and loud appeal from Leach and his teammates. The umpire, with no hesitation, raised his finger.

Salman, unconvinced, opted for a review. However, the replays confirmed the umpire’s decision. There was no contact with the bat, and ball-tracking technology showed three reds, confirming the delivery was hitting the stumps.

With the decision upheld, Salman was forced to depart, bringing an end to his valiant innings of 63 off 84 balls.

England’s Dominance On Day 4

Harry Brook and Joe Root dominated the Pakistani bowlers with a historic partnership of 454 runs, as England posted a massive total of 823/7 before declaring on Day 4. Brook's maiden triple-century of 317 runs and Root's career-best 262 set the stage for England to take control of the match.

Pakistan, in response, struggled under pressure. By the end of Day 4, the home team had lost six wickets, and England’s bowlers continued to exert control.

The visitors are well-positioned as they secured a memorable victory. The early dismissal has dampened Pakistan’s hopes of salvaging the match. At the time of writing, England has won the match by an innings and 47 runs.
