A cricket commentator has ignited controversy and backlash after allegedly making a racist comment directed at a Nepalese cricketer during a practice match between Nepal and Canada’s High-Performance Team.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, October 8, during the third and final game of the practice series held in Kathmandu. A video of the offensive remark has since gone viral on social media, prompting outrage among cricket fans and calls for accountability from various groups.

Nepal Cricket Fan Club Condemns Racist Remark

In the video, the commentator can be heard casually making the remark, with one of his fellow commentators immediately pointing out the inappropriateness of the comment. However, the individual continued, even attempting to imitate the local accent, which further fueled the backlash.

According to some fans, the commentator tried to speak Hindi with a Nepali accent, calling the cricketer a 'security guard' and using the phrase, 'Oh Sahaab Ji,' in a tone that was perceived as condescending and mocking.

Following the incident, Nepal Rhino’s Army, a prominent Nepalese cricket fan club, released a statement condemning the racist remark and urging cricket administrators to take swift action against the commentator.

In their statement, the fan club expressed disappointment and frustration over the comment, describing it as 'utterly disgraceful and unacceptable' and stating that such behavior is 'entirely contrary to the values of respect, inclusion, and fair play.'

The fan club’s statement emphasized the importance of accountability and demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. They called for immediate action, including a public apology from the commentator and education on respect and inclusivity in sports.

Following the series in Kathmandu, Nepal recently participated in a tri-series in Canada and is now set to travel to the United States for a three-match T20I series and a five-match ODI series against the United States. This tour is scheduled from October 18 to November 4 and is expected to draw significant attention from fans in the United States and South Asia alike.
