In an incredible display of power-hitting, New Zealand pacer Tim Southee scripted a new milestone, this time not with the ball, but with the bat. During the ongoing first Test against India at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Southee climbed up the ranks to become the sixth batter to hit the most sixes in Test cricket.

The milestone came in the 81st over of New Zealand’s innings, where Tim Southee swung Mohammed Siraj's delivery over backward square leg to bring up his 92nd six, surpassing India's legendary Virender Sehwag.

Southee Powers Past Sehwag

Southee, known more for his destructive bowling, has always packed a punch with the bat. While he may not boast the numbers of a top-order batter, his ability to clear the boundary ropes is second to none.

In his 103rd Test, Southee etched his name above Virender Sehwag, who had hit 91 sixes in his illustrious career spanning 104 matches. The New Zealand speedster achieved this feat with sheer force, hammering Siraj’s short ball into the stands.

It was a moment that took everyone by surprise – not because Southee is unfamiliar with big hits, but because of the illustrious company he now finds himself in.

With this mighty blow, Southee is now rubbing shoulders with some of the most prolific six-hitters in the longest format of the game. His tally of 92 sixes is no mean feat, especially for a lower-order batter.

What makes his achievement even more remarkable is that despite averaging just over 15 with the bat in Tests, his knack for hitting sixes has been his most defining trait with the bat.

The Elite Club Of Six-Hitters

Southee’s six-hitting brilliance has placed him in an exclusive club, alongside some of cricket’s biggest names. Below is the list of players with the most sixes in Test cricket:

Kiwis Well In Control After Early Jitters On Day 3

Southee’s half-century came at a crucial time for New Zealand, as they continued to build on their massive first-innings lead.

At lunch on Day 3, the Black Caps stood tall at 345/7, with a lead of 299 runs. Southee’s whirlwind 49 off 50 balls, studded with three sixes and three fours, added salt to India’s wounds after they were bundled out for a paltry 46 earlier in the match.

Rachin Ravindra, who remains unbeaten on a splendid 104, has been the architect of New Zealand's dominance. Along with Southee, Ravindra has stitched together an invaluable 112-run partnership, pulling the match further out of India’s grasp.

Despite India’s brief glimmer of hope earlier in the day when they picked up four quick wickets, the Southee-Ravindra stand has dashed their spirits and effectively batted them out of the game – or have they already? Only time will tell!
