Sophie Devine-led New Zealand consign Pakistan to a huge defeat in match number 19 of the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Dubai, thus knocking India out of the tournament’s semifinals race in the process.

Here’s the timeline of how NZ-W vs PAK-W panned out in Dubai:

NZ-W vs PAK-W Highlights: Suzie Bates, Plimmer Headline New Zealand’s Strong Powerplay

New Zealand openers Suzie Bates and Georgia Plimmer extracted 39 wicketless runs from the first six overs to defy Pakistan’s new ball attack. Bates led the early aggression by smacking 28 runs at near run-a-ball, while Plimmer launched two boundaries in her swift 17-run knock before both cricketers were dismissed in quick succession by Nashra Sandhu.

Amelia Kerr and captain Sophie Devine took over New Zealand’s command in the ninth over to take their team to 54-2 at the halfway stage of the innings.

NZ-W vs PAK-W Highlights: Spinners Strike Back To Restrict NZ To 110

Piling on Pakistan’s newfound momentum, right-arm spinner Omaima Sohail got rid of Amelia Kerr for a sluggish nine in the 12th over before Sophie Devine and Brooke Halliday navigated New Zealand near the 100-run mark.

Both Devine (19 off 25) and Halliday (22 off 24) punched out identical knocks and shared 39 runs together for the fourth wicket. However, both were dismissed by Nashra Sandhu (3-18) and Sadia Iqbal (1-23) in consecutive deliveries as Pakistan regained some momentum at the death. Maddy Green flogged a handy nine as New Zealand recorded 110-6 from 20 overs.

NZ-W vs PAK-W Highlights: Amelia Kerr, Carson Envelop PAK As NZ Marches Into Semis

New Zealand off-spinner Eden Carson and fast bowler Lea Tahuhu jolted Pakistan’s top-order with the new ball, as the two cricketers accounted for the early wickets of both openers, Aliya Riaz and Muneeba Ali.

After the exit of both Pakistan openers at 19-2, New Zealand bowlers frolicked through the rest of the ‘Women in Green’ batting order. Overall, Pakistan had their entire response enveloped for just 56 in 11.4 overs to fall 54 runs short of their target.

Captain Fatima Sana top-scored with 21 of those runs from 23 balls before becoming one of Amelia Kerr’s three victims of the evening.

Carson added another to her tally to claim figures of 2-7, while the likes of Rosemary Mair, Lea Tahuhu and Fran Jonas chipped in with a wicket each.

The outcome helped New Zealand become the second team from Group A to qualify for the semifinals, thus knocking out Pakistan and India at a single stroke.
