In the match, India won the toss and elected to bat first. The openers, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, provided a strong start for the Women in Blue, adding 98 runs for the first wicket. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's rapid half-century, remaining unbeaten on 50 off 27 balls, propelled India to a total of 172/3 in 20 overs.

In response, Renuka Singh Thakur made an early breakthrough by dismissing Vishmi Gunaratne for a duck. Shreyanka Patil claimed the crucial wicket of Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu in the second over. A late surge by Ama Kanchana helped Sri Lanka Women reach a somewhat respectable total, preventing what appeared to be a potential loss by over 100 runs.
