Indian women’s team head coach Amol Muzumdar has revealed that Harmanpreet Kaur will continue to bat at the disputed number three position at the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The legendary cricketer also batted at number three in India’s recent warm-up fixtures, where she managed to score just 11 runs combined against West Indies and South Africa in Dubai.

Despite her recent struggles, coach Amol Muzumdar claimed that elevating Harmanpreet Kaur up the order was pre-decided during the tournament camp itself.

Harmanpreet to bat at three despite underwhelming record

While speaking with ESPNCricinfo, head coach Amol Muzumdar confirmed that Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur will bat at number three for her team at the 2024 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. He added that Harmanpreet’s elevation up the order was decided during India’s pre-tournament training camp in Bengaluru itself.

When asked if the Indian skipper will continue to bat at number three despite her warm-up struggles, Amol Muzumdar said:

“Absolutely. We had a lovely camp in Bangalore. We had decided there itself.”

Harmanpreet Kaur holds a T20I batting average of 28.08 in her 173-match career. However, her average while batting at number three is significantly lower at 21.28. The seasoned cricketer seems to relish batting at number four instead, considering her average amounts to 29.10 at the position.

While Harmanpreet failed to notch up a notable score at number three during India’s warm-up fixtures against West Indies and South Africa, she minted 82 runs at the preceding Women’s Asia Cup 2024 in Sri Lanka in just three innings batting at number four at an average of 41. The 35-year-old even pounded a match-winning 66 in one of the Group A games of the tournament against UAE.

Team India, under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, will commence their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign with a match against New Zealand in Dubai on October 4. The ‘Women in Blue’ is yet to clinch a single T20 world title, and fell agonizingly short during the 2020 edition in Australia under the guidance of Harmanpreet.
