The ninth edition of the Women's T20 World Cup has kicked off in the UAE. In the tournament's first match, the hosts, Bangladesh, defeated Scotland and started their campaign in style. 

The second game of the tourney saw a repeat of the Asia Cup 2024 semi-final between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Fatima Sana and her girls put on an all-around team effort to earn a convincing win by 31 runs. 

Fatima Sana's effort took Pakistan to a fighting total

Pakistan won the toss in this game and elected to bat first. The Sri Lankan bowlers did an excellent job of restricting the Pakistani batters for most of their batting effort. However, the captain of the Pakistan team decided to put in a gritty and gutsy show. Fatima Sana scored 30 runs off 20 deliveries while batting lower down the order, propelling the team towards a fighting total of 116 at the end of the 20 overs.

In reply, Sri Lanka failed to register a steady start, which put them in sinking waters. After the early departure of their skipper, Chamari Athapaththu, Sri Lanka depended heavily on their middle-order batters. Batters like Harshita Samarawickrama, Hasini Perera, Kavisha Dilhari, and Nilakshi de Silva could have taken the game away from Pakistan. 

Omaima Sohail, the experienced spinner of Pakistan, had something different in her mind. She picked up the wickets of Samarawickrama and Perera and virtually ended the fight from the Sri Lankans. 

The Sri Lankan lower order failed to show any further resistance, and ultimately, they were restricted to 85/9 at the end of the 20 overs. Pakistan won the match convincingly with 31 runs, avenging their defeat in the Asia Cup 2024.
