West Indies to find new young talent [Source: windiescricket]
Cricket West Indies recently held a three-day Talent Identification Workshop at Port of Spain, Trinidad, from May 8-10, under the West Indies Breakout League. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together talent scouts, coaches, and performance personnel to better recognise and develop upcoming cricket heroes around the Caribbean.
West Indies’ cricketing standards have dropped significantly in the last few years as they failed to qualify for the ODI World Cup in 2023. Their effectiveness in the T20 format has also diminished with time.
However, to salvage the damage, Cricket West Indies is taking appropriate measures, starting with a talent workshop.
CWI To Identify The Future Of West Indies
Daren Sammy, Head Coach of the West Indies Men’s Team, played a key role in the Talent Identification Workshop held in Trinidad this week. He was joined by CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe, High-Performance Manager Dwain Gill, Senior Talent Manager Jamal Smith, and Performance Analyst Avenesh Seetaram.
The workshop was attended by six Territorial Talent Identifiers from Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Leeward Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, and Windward Islands.
Sammy praised the workshop, saying it helps talent scouts understand how players are selected for the international team. He described how they utilise data, planning, and strategy in order to pick the appropriate players for T20s, ODIs, and Tests. The idea is for each territory to follow a similar method at the local level, so young players are better prepared for the international stage.
Sammy added that as West Indies cricket looks to rise again on the global stage, these talent identifiers will be key.
Windies Brings Captaincy Overhaul In Test, T20I
West Indies cricket had earlier announced key captaincy changes, with Kraigg Brathwaite stepping down as Test captain and Shai Hope taking over T20I leadership from Rovman Powell. Already an ODI skipper, Hope now leads in both white-ball formats. His T20I captaincy begins with tours to Ireland and England in June 2025.
