In the latest development, Jammu and Kashmir speedster Umran Malik’s red-ball career faces another significant setback as he has been ruled out for four to six weeks due to a hip injury. This unfortunate development will likely see him miss the initial phase of the upcoming Ranji Trophy season, set to commence on October 11, 2024.

Jammu and Kashmir, part of the Elite Group A in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 will open their campaign on October 11 against Maharashtra in Srinagar.

According to a report from K Sports Watch, the Jammu and Kashmir team is expected to consider either Waseem Bashir or Umar Nazir as his replacement.

Recurring injuries have marred Umran Malik's red-ball journey. Initially, he was expected to participate in the 2024 Duleep Trophy as part of the Ruturaj Gaikwad-led Team C. However, he was forced to withdraw due to a bout of dengue.

His once-promising career has been on a downturn since his breakout IPL season in 2022, which earned him his maiden national call-up. Despite his impressive debut, his recent IPL seasons have been lacklustre, and he has since fallen out of favour with the national selectors across all formats.

Umran Malik’s International And IPL Journey

He made his international debut for India in a T20I against Ireland on June 26, 2022. In his T20I career so far, Malik has taken 11 wickets in eight matches.

Following his T20I debut, Malik played his first ODI match against New Zealand in Auckland on November 25, 2022. In 10 ODIs to date, he has claimed 13 wickets. Additionally, he has made 12 First-Class appearances and secured 16 wickets, and in 14 List-A matches, he has taken 15 wickets.

Despite his early promise, Malik’s performances in the IPL over the last two seasons have been underwhelming. His decline in form, coupled with persistent injuries, has put his future with the SRH franchise in doubt, and he is not expected to be retained ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.
