Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has expressed his support for the inclusion of Delhi-based pacer Mayank Yadav in India’s playing XI for the first T20I against Bangladesh in Gwalior today (October 6).

The 22-year-old fast bowler generated excitement during his short stint with LSG in the 2024 IPL. He grabbed the limelight with his raw pace and consistent line and length. However, an abdominal strain sidelined him and forced him out of the remainder of the tournament.

While Yadav was anticipated to play in the 2024 Duleep Trophy, but the BCCI opted to rest him for the red-ball format and prioritize his return to form and fitness in limited-overs cricket instead.

Now fully fit, he has been fast-tracked into India’s T20I squad, and Aakash Chopra believes it would be a missed opportunity to leave him on the bench.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra analyzed Mayank Yadav's potential, highlighting the pace and aggression he brings to the bowling attack. He also stated that the Delhi-born pacer's capabilities would be invaluable to the Indian side, especially on the slower tracks in Gwalior where raw speed can be a game-changer.

“There are three contenders who not only we but even the franchises will have their eyes on because Mayank Yadav can be retained for four crores if he doesn't become a capped Indian. Similarly, KKR can retain Harshit Rana and the SunRisers Hyderabad can retain Nitish Kumar Reddy for four crores if they don't become capped Indians,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

He added that keeping Mayank on the bench would be an inefficient use of resources, as his inclusion in the squad reflects the board's commitment to nurturing young talent.

“Either you are a fast bowler or a medium pacer. It's either or. You have fast-tracked him. You have said that his first-class performances don't matter to you, or how much cricket he has played doesn't matter to you. So if you have picked him, play him. You don't pick a sword to keep it in a sheath," the former India opener added.

However, it is important to note that Yadav is not the only young pacer vying for a debut. Harshit Rana, another IPL 2024 standout, is also in the squad and is seen as a strong contender. While reports have indicated that both Mayank Yadav and Harshit Rana are likely to make their international debuts in the first T20I
