The Indian cricket team is expected to depart for Australia at least a couple of weeks prior to the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy match at Perth’s Optus Stadium. Rohit Sharma and co. will also be playing either one or two intra-squad matches against the ‘A’ team in a bid to prepare for the five-match Test series.

As of now, the Indian team is gearing up to face New Zealand in a three-match Test series at home. The first Test of the series will commence on October 16 in Bengaluru and the series will conclude at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium in early November.

India To Face The 'A' Team Before Australia Tests

Team India’s home series against New Zealand will conclude on November 5 in Mumbai if the third Test reaches its final day. In such a case, the Indian team will be expected to take flight for Australia just a couple of days after the series against New Zealand.

Prior to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, the BCCI is considering to organise a four-day practice match between India and India A in a bid to give Rohit Sharma’s troops some quality match simulation ‘Down Under’. The India A team is expected to leave for Australia by October 25, and the squad will likely be announced after the first round of Ranji Trophy 2024 fixtures.

Even back in December 2023, both India and India A teams were present in South Africa at the same time for practice matches. Apart from the four-day practice match before the first Test, the senior Indian men’s team is also expected to play a two-day day/night match in Canberra on November 30 and December 1 against Prime Minister’s XI to prepare for the impending Pink-Ball Test at the Adelaide Oval on December 6.

The series against New Zealand and Australia constitutes a part of the ongoing 2023-25 WTC cycle. Team India will be aiming to reach their third successive WTC final, scheduled to be held in England next year.
