Ratan Tata, the beloved former chairman of the Tata Group and one of India’s most influential business leaders, passed away late on Wednesday at 86. He was reportedly under intensive care in a Mumbai hospital, where he had been battling health issues in recent weeks. 

The news of his passing marks the end of an era, as Tata was not only Indian industry but also a compassionate philanthropist and a strong supporter of Indian sports.

"It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation. His passing has been widely mourned, with condolences pouring in from across the globe, reflecting the deep respect he commanded. In an official statement, the Tata Group said. 

Ratan Tata’s leadership of the Tata Group spanned over two decades, from 1991 to 2012. During his tenure, he transformed the conglomerate into a global powerhouse with businesses in over 100 countries, spanning sectors from steel and automotive to software and hospitality.

Ratan Tata Was A Supporter of Indian Sports And Athletes

Ratan Tata was a passionate sports enthusiast and a consistent supporter of Indian athletes. His commitment to sports extended beyond financial support to include job placements and career development opportunities for players across cricket and other fields. Under Tata’s leadership, the Tata Group played a crucial role in the careers of numerous Indian cricketers. 

Former cricketer Farokh Engineer, for instance, was supported by Tata Motors during his playing years, while players such as Mohinder Amarnath, Sanjay Manjrekar, Robin Uthappa, and VVS Laxman found support through Tata-owned Air India. 

Indian Airlines, also linked to the Tata Group, was pivotal in the careers of stars like Javagal Srinath, Harbhajan Singh, Yuvraj Singh, and Mohammed Kaif.

More recently, current players Shardul Thakur and Jayant Yadav received Tata Group support. Additionally, Ajit Agarkar also received support from Tata Steel. 

His dedication to supporting sports and athletes earned him deep respect among India’s cricket community and beyond. Ratan Tata’s passing is a significant loss for India and the world. His contributions as an industrialist, philanthropist, and supporter of Indian sports will be remembered for generations.
