In a significant development, legendary Sri Lankan batter Mahela Jayawardene has replaced Mark Boucher as Mumbai Indians' head coach for the IPL 2025. The five-time champions made an official announcement regarding the Lankan great's return through a social media post. 

Taking to their official handle on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mumbai Indians announced Jayawardene's comeback as their head coach for the upcoming IPL season. The franchise posted a video of Jayawardene's previous stint with a caption,

Jayawardene's Coaching Journey In MI Colours

After retiring from professional cricket, Mahela Jayawardene joined Mumbai Indians' coaching staff in the Indian Premier League. The former Sri Lankan captain was instrumental in MI's astounding success over the years, leading them to three IPL titles during his six-year coaching stint. 

Considering his overwhelming success as a head coach, MI gave Jayawardene a bigger responsibility, appointing him as their global head of performance. In that role, the batting maestro supervised the coaching and scouting process of the franchise's four teams across the globe- MI Emirates, MI Cape Town, MI New York and Mumbai Indians. 

Did Boucher's Failure Force MI To Re-Appoint Jayawardene? 

Mumbai Indians' decision to recruit Mark Boucher as their head coach brought disastrous results for them in the IPL 2024. The five-time trophy-lifters had a roller-coaster start before a winless streak pushed them down to the bottom of the points table.
