In a notable recognition of their outstanding performances, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced Sri Lanka's Kamindu Mendis and England's Tammy Beaumont as the ICC Players of the Month for September 2024. Both players secured the prestigious award for the second time, with Mendis previously winning in March 2024, and Beaumont in February 2021.

Kamindu Mendis Shines In Test Cricket

Kamindu Mendis earned the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award after a stellar display in Test cricket throughout September. Competing against fellow nominees Travis Head of Australia and Prabath Jayasuriya from Sri Lanka, Mendis demonstrated his form and consistency, particularly in series in England and against New Zealand at home.

The 26-year-old Mendis accumulated 451 runs over four Tests with an impressive average of 90.20. His month began in England with crucial scores of 74 and 64, but he truly excelled on home soil in Galle, facing New Zealand.

In the first Test, Mendis showcased his resilience with a crucial 114 on a challenging pitch. He followed this performance with a career-best 182 in the second Test, which secured an innings victory for Sri Lanka. With this achievement, Mendis became the first player to score fifty or more in each of his first eight Test matches and the fastest batter in 75 years to reach 1,000 Test runs.

Tammy Beaumont’s Explosive Form in Ireland

Meanwhile, England’s Tammy Beaumont secured the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award, beating nominees Aimee Maguire of Ireland and Esha Oza of the UAE. Beaumont’s selection highlights her pivotal role in England’s white-ball success in Ireland, where she amassed 279 runs over five matches.

After a quiet start in the series, Beaumont delivered a powerful 150 off 139 balls in the second match. Her form continued as she added another half-century in the final ODI. Beaumont wrapped up the month with scores of 27 and 40 in the T20Is, helping England secure a series draw.

Her achievement makes her the first Englishwoman to win the ICC Women’s Player of the Month since Maia Bouchier’s victory in March.
