IPL Uncapped Player Retention: Is Yash Dayal's Test Exclusion A Blessing In Disguise For RCB?

On Friday, India announced their squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand. While Rohit Sharma was named captain, Jasprit Bumrah was reinstated as India's vice-captain in the purest format. India made a solitary change to their squad from the Bangladesh Tests, excluding Yash Dayal from the team.

A promising left-arm pacer, Yash Dayal received his maiden Test call-up following his impressive outings in the Duleep Trophy. The seamer, who represented India B in the competition, bagged four wickets at an impressive average of 22.25 and a strike rate of 42. However, despite performing admirably in the domestic circuit, Dayal warmed the bench during the Bangladesh series, with India preferring Akash Deep for the third seamer's role.

Yash Dayal's Test Exclusion Paves Way For His IPL Retention As An Uncapped Player

Meanwhile, Yash Dayal's exclusion from the Indian Test side confirms that he will remain an uncapped player by the end of this month. According to the IPL 2025 player regulations, a player can be retained in the uncapped category if he doesn't play an international match before October 31, the deadline to submit the retained players' list.

So, as Dayal won't receive his debut cap in the New Zealand Tests, RCB can retain him as an uncapped player ahead of the much-awaited IPL mega auction. So, the speedster's omission from the Test squad is certainly a blessing in disguise for RCB, as the franchise can consider retaining him for INR 4 Crores, INR 1 Crore less than his current price, and bolster their fast-bowling department.

Considering his ability to bowl across phases, Dayal could be an asset for RCB on Bengaluru's placid surface. Although he had a forgettable time in IPL 2023, conceding five successive sixes to Rinku Singh, the 26-year-old redeemed himself with a memorable stint with the Royal Challengers.

In fact, he was RCB's most successful bowler alongside Mohammed Siraj, scalping 15 wickets in 14 appearances. So, given that he can be retained under the uncapped category and he performed for the team, RCB might seriously consider keeping him for the next season.
