The Indian women’s team is gearing up for a historic journey as they prepare to face New Zealand Women in their opening match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024 on Friday (October 4). With the motivation of replicating the men's recent success, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side is aiming to create history by chasing their first-ever Women's T20 World Cup title.

Jemimah Rodrigues Shares Her Thoughts And Aims To Replicate Men's Historic World Cup Victory

In the latest interview with Star Sports, Jemimah Rodrigues recently reflected on the powerful emotions that swept through the women's camp as they witnessed the men’s team lift the trophy at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

Rohit Sharma and his team, triumphed over South Africa in a thrilling final at Kensington Oval, Barbados, as they clinched the title by seven runs to end an 11-year ICC trophy drought.

“I remember watching the men’s final. We had a Test match against South Africa, and on Day 3, we stayed up until 12 or 1:30 in the night watching the match. I remember that moment clearly. We’ve always dreamt of winning the World Cup, but seeing them win just before our World Cup made it feel so much more real,” Jemimah said to Star Sports.

Jemimah Rodrigues described the scene in the India women’s camp as they witnessed the men’s victory. She stated that they are usually a lively group, but after the victory the players fell into an unexpected silence as the men lifted the trophy.

“That desire and passion to win was ignited when we saw Rohit Sharma and the team lifting the trophy. A few of us were in the room, and we’re usually a talkative bunch, especially me, but when that happened, we all fell silent,” she added.

With the men’s victory fresh in their minds, the Indian women’s team is channelling that inspiration into their own preparation for the World Cup.

“I knew everyone was thinking, ‘When will our time come? How will it feel to see Harry Di lift the World Cup with us in the background?’ I don’t want to think too much about the result, honestly. The dream is there, but we’re focusing more on the process and what we need to do. We’ll let God take care of the result,” Jemimah added.

As the team embarks on their campaign, starting with New Zealand, they’ll be looking to carry the momentum generated by the men's victory, while maintaining their focus on the hard work ahead.
