The India's tour of Australia 2024-25 turned out to be a disaster for the Rohit Sharma led side as they lost the series 3-1 and failed to reach the World Test Championship finals (WTC). Prior to the Australia tour, the Indian side were whitewashed 3-0 by the Kiwis at home and hence, Rohit's men had to beat the Aussies to reach the finale.
Why Rohit Sharma dropped himself? Reason revealed
However, barring Jasprit Bumrah who stood like a brick wall and was the lone warrior, none of the Indian batters, including captain Rohit Sharma gave any fight as the Aussies won an easy series. In-fact, Rohit had a horrendous tour, Down Under and was out of touch as he decided to drop himself from the 5th Test in Sydney.
Now, in an exclusive chat with former Aussie cricketer, Michael Clarke, Rohit revealed the reason as to why he dropped himself.
"We wanted, and we somehow wanted Gill to play. He missed out in the previous test match. We wanted him to play. So, I mean, I'm like, okay, if I'm not hitting the ball well, it is right now and I spoke to the coach and the selector who were there on the tour as well. And they kind of agreed, not agreed.
There was an argument around it. You try and put the team first and just look at what the team wants make the decision accordingly and sometimes it will work and sometimes it may not. So that's how it goes. Every decision you try and make, you're not guaranteed success or you're not guaranteed that this is the right decision that you've done."
Gill failed to deliver the goods in Rohit's absence
Rohit showed trust in Shubman Gill and India's number 3 failed to deliver the goods in the 5th Test match at Sydney. He scored just 33 runs in two innings as India lost a one-sided battle. Moreover, in the entire series, the young Indian batter slammed just 93 runs in 3 matches and couldn't contribute much.
