Indian captain Rohit Sharma reflected on his side's shambolic performance on day 2 of the first Test against New Zealand at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. After the first day was abandoned, India took a brave call to bat first on a pitch that had significant assistance for the fast bowlers.

As expected, the decision proved costly for the hosts, as New Zealand exploited the conditions, rattling them out for 46, their third-lowest score in Tests. In the post-day press conference, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma took accountability for the horrendous batting display, blaming his misjudgement for his side's disastrous outing.

"We thought it wouldn’t help the seamers much after the first session or so. There wasn’t much grass either. We expected it to be much flatter than it turned out to be. It was a misjudgment on my part, and I couldn’t read the pitch well,” Rohit was quoted as saying by RevSportz.

Rohit Sharma Explains Virat Kohli's Batting Promotion

As India's number three batter Shubman Gill missed out on selection due to a neck injury, the hosts promoted Virat Kohli to take up the spot in the Bengaluru Test. After Tim Southee sent Rohit packing with a ripper, Kohli walked out to bat at three, eventually being dismissed for a duck.

In the presser, Rohit revealed that Kohli keenly took the responsibility of batting at three, as the management didn't want to alter KL Rahul's batting position.

"We don't want to touch KL's batting position much, he has found a place at 6 so let's give him a rope there, same with Sarfaraz, So Virat was the one who wanted to take the responsibility and that's a good sign of players taking responsibility," the Indian captain added.

New Zealand Dominate India On Day 2 Of 1st Test

After restricting the hosts to a meagre 46-run total, New Zealand showcased their batting prowess, posting 180 for three wickets before stumps on day 2. The visitors already have a 134-run lead and would like to put up a huge first innings total, with plenty of time left in this Test match.
