In a significant development, ahead of the T20I series between India and Bangladesh, Indian T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav has confirmed that Sanju Samson will open alongside Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order.

The three-match series kicks off today (October 6) in Gwalior, with both teams eager to make their mark, followed by the second game in Delhi, and the final T20I in Hyderabad on October 12.

Aakash Chopra’s Comments On Samson-Abhishek Opening Pair

Former Indian opener Aakash Chopra expressed his support for this opening combination. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, he highlighted Samson’s effortless stroke play and his ability to take on bowlers from the start.

"Sanju re baba - make Samson open because Abhishek Sharma is certain at one end. However, since you have not picked Ruturaj Gaikwad, he was playing in the Irani Trophy, so only Sanju Samson is left. He has opened, he has played at No. 3, and we have even seen him bat down the order at No. 5 and No. 6. He is an incredible and mighty player. When he scores runs, he shows as if it's very easy to bat. However, his problem is that he goes for one too many shots. Then he gets out and you say - 'How did you do that Sanju, this was a chance and you let it go'," Chopra added.

However, he also pointed out that the Kerala wicketkeeper-batter tends to throw away his wicket, a habit he needs to work on to succeed as an opener.

Sanju Samson's Opening Record And The Need For Consistency

The absence of regular openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal from India’s 15-member squad for this series has opened the door for Samson. Although he usually bats at No. 3 in the IPL, he has previous experience as an opener in T20 cricket. In his five innings as a T20I opener, Samson has accumulated 105 runs at an average of 21.00.

Despite these promising numbers, Samson’s overall record in T20Is suggests room for improvement. His tendency to lose his wicket while going for big shots has previously hindered his ability to play substantial innings.
