Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that the Punjab Kings franchise does not have any capped player worth the retention value of Rs.18 crore. It is worth noting that as per revamped regulations, each franchise can retain no more than five capped cricketers. The IPL governing council also announced the sum of Rs.18 crores, Rs. 14 crores and Rs. 11 crores as the three possible values for the case of five retentions to be made by franchises.

Aakash Chopra believes that under new regulations, as well as under a new management, the Punjab Kings will likely not be retaining any of its capped players. The ex-Indian opener, however, claimed that the franchise does have multiple options among its uncapped pool of players.

Aakash Chopra predicts PBKS mega auction strategies

Taking to his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra claimed that the Punjab Kings franchise will likely not be retaining any of its capped players as they do not have anyone worth retaining for Rs. 18 crores. He also added that under a new management led by head coach Ricky Ponting, the franchise will be employing a fresh “approach” among international stars going ahead. He said:

“New coach, new thinking, new approach. If they go with that, will they want to retain anyone? Do they have anyone worth 18 crores? They have uncapped players but does Punjab have any capped players worthy of 18 crores?”

Aakash Chopra is of the opinion that the Punjab Kings franchise might consider retaining Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh as uncapped Indian players. He added that Ashutosh Sharma, who rose to fame this year during IPL 2024, might also be under consideration but the limit of uncapped retentions (two) can cause an impasse between players within the management. He added:

“I will try to retain Shashank. He is an uncapped Indian. You will get him for four crores. I can think about Prabhsimran Singh. He is also an uncapped Indian whom you will get for four crores. If I think about Ashutosh, you can retain only two uncapped players.”

The Punjab Kings franchise will be expected to make some retention announcements in the coming weeks. The IPL 2025 mega auction, meanwhile, is scheduled to be organized sometime later this year.
