Run out drama in Super Over (Source:@_SatyaPrakash08/X.com)
The final group stage game of the Asia Cup 2025 turned out to be an absolute cracker of a game. Both teams scored 202 with the bat and the match went to the Super Over where India finally managed to win the game.
However, the Super Over was not without drama. On the fourth ball of Sri Lanka's batting, Arshdeep Singh bowled a full and wide delivery outside off. Dasun Shanaka, the Sri Lankan batter, tried to smash it away but missed it and the ball went towards Sanju Samson. Shanaka tried to steal a single but got no response from his partner, and in the meantime, Sanju Samson fired a direct hit at the batter's end. It looked like Dasun Shanaka was gone, but that is when the real drama started.
Why Dasun Shanaka Survived Despite Getting Run Out?
When the ball went to Sanju Samson initially, there was an appeal for a caught behind from the bowler, and the umpire had given it out. Shanaka, on his part, took the DRS, and according to the rules, when the umpire raises the finger, the delivery is labelled as a dead ball and everything that happens after that is null and void. Therefore, Shanaka, despite clearly getting run out by Sanju Samson, was given not out as, after the DRS, there was no edge found off the bat.
The Indian captain, Suryakumar Yadav, did not like the decision, but the umpire, Gazi Sohel, made sure that he made the Indian captain understand the rule. Nevertheless, Dasun Shanaka was out on the next ball, and Sri Lanka could score just two runs in the Super Over.
Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav and vice-captain Shubman Gill walked out with the bat for India and they knocked off the required runs on the very first ball.
