The left-hander looked in sublime touch once again as he raced to a record-breaking 22-ball fifty inside the powerplay, his third in a row. However, he fell for 61 to Charith Asalanka with India reaching 100 for 3 at the halfway mark. Tilak Varma and Sanju Samson joined hands and steadied the innings with a 66-run stand.
Samson enjoyed his time at the crease, smashing 39 off 23 to keep India on course for a big total.At one stage, they looked set to surpass 215, but Hardik Pandya’s cheap dismissal stalled the momentum. Tilak Varma, unbeaten on 49, and Axar Patel with 21*could not quite provide the final flourish as India settled for 202 in 20 overs.
Nissanka’s heroics take Sri Lanka to Super Over showdown
Chasing 203, Sri Lanka unleashed a sensational batting display as Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka dominated the powerplay, racing to 72/1 and putting India’s bowlers under immense pressure. Sri Lanka did lose Kusal Mendis early but the duo of Nissanka and Perera continued their aggressive approach.
By the halfway mark, both batsmen had reached their half-centuries, with Sri Lanka cruising at 114/1. India’s bowling attack struggled to contain the flow of runs, unable to find breakthroughs, leaving the visitors in a strong position in the chase.
India struck back with Kuldeep Yadav’s tidy over and Varun Chakravarthy dismissing Kusal Perera, ending a 127-run stand. Sri Lanka did lose further wickets, but Pathum Nissanka stayed composed and completed his maiden T20I century.
The equation came down to 12 runs in the last over, and Sri Lanka lost Nissanka on the very first ball. Later, Dasun Shanaka and Janith Liyanage guided the match to a super over.
Arshdeep dismantles Sri Lanka in Super Over to seal India’s win
Arshdeep Singh produced a masterclass in the Super Over, dismissing Kusal Perera first ball with a sharp Rinku Singh catch. Precise wide yorkers troubled Sri Lanka, Shanaka survived a dead-ball mix-up, but fell next delivery, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 2/2.
India with Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav wrapped up the Super Over in just the first delivery, securing victory and concluding a high intense evening ahead of the much-anticipated final of the Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday.
