In the second match of the Women's T20 World Cup 2024, Pakistan faced Sri Lanka at the iconic Sharjah Stadium in the UAE. This was a repeat of the Asia Cup 2024 semi-final, where Sri Lanka had the better of Pakistan. However, in this game, carried by an all-round show by their skipper, Pakistan managed to avenge that defeat.

Fatima Sana took her team to a respectable total

Fatima Sana, the skipper of the Pakistan team, won the toss and decided to bat first. The Sri Lankan bowlers did a great job restricting the Pakistan batters and did not let them get off the hook easily. The Pakistan batters struggled to score freely on a slowish wicket, and it looked like they would fail to reach a fighting total.

However, the team captain, Fatima Sana, played a highly valuable knock of 30 runs from 20 deliveries, helping the team reach a respectable score of 116 at the end of their 20 overs.

Chamari Athapaththu's dismissal put Sri Lanka under pressure

Even though the target looked achievable, the Sri Lankan team needed their prime batter and skipper, Chamari Athapaththu, to play an important knock. A lot depended on the start the left-handed opening batter would provide.

The Pakistani skipper, Fatima Sana, once again did precisely what was required of her. In the third over, Sana accounted for Athapaththu and put the Sri Lankans under pressure. On the second delivery of the over, Sana dished up a full delivery swinging away from the batter. Chamari, a naturally aggressive batter, tried to clear the infield on the offside with an inside-out shot. But she mistimed it, and it landed straight into the hands of the cover fielder.

The Sri Lankans failed to recover from this early jolt. Even though Vishmi Gunaratne and Nilakshi de Silva tried to fight it out for the team, it was not enough for them. The Sri Lankans were restricted to just 85/9 in their 20 overs as they lost the match by 31 runs.
