Mohammed Shami breathed fire on Friday (September 22) in India's first ODI of the three-match series against Australia in Mohali. Coming in as a replacement of Mohammed Siraj, the veteran fast bowler struck early to dismiss Mitchell Marsh, and then, in his first over of his second spell, got rid of Steve Smith with an absolute peach of a delivery.

It was the third ball of the 22nd over of Australia's innings, which Shami bowled with an upright seam. Smith, batting on 41, attempted to drive, but the ball nipped in sharply to take the inside edge of his bat. In fact, the former Australian skipper was completely bamboozled by the delivery before it went on to uproot the leg stump.

At this point, Shami has returned excellent figures of 5.3-1-20-2 to lead from the front for the Men in Blue. Australia, on the other hand, are on 119/3 in 23.3 overs after KL Rahul won the toss and asked them to bat first at Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium.

India currently have a few places to sort out before the ODI World Cup. With Shami's recent performances, it is safe to say that the experienced fast bowler is in pole position to get the position of their third-choice fast bowler, alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
