Joe Root and Harry Brook shattered numerous batting records before an early Ollie Pope declaration allowed Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carson to break through Pakistan’s top-order on Day 4 of the first Multan Test.

Resuming the English innings at 492-3 on the fourth morning, unbeaten centurions Joe Root and Harry Brook completed their respective double hundreds before lunch. The two cricketers racked up 166 runs from the 29-over opening session to take England over 100 runs ahead of Pakistan’s 556.

Root reached 259* before walking out to record his career-best score in Tests. For Brook, the innings marked his maiden double ton and he looked all settled to add a lot more to his tally of 218*.

England faced 20 more overs in the second session of the day before interim captain Ollie Pope declared the visitor’s innings at 823-7d. Having faced 150 overs, the Englishmen maintained a staggering innings run-rate of 5.48.

After the lunch break, Harry Brook’s record-breaking 454-run partnership with Joe Root (262 off 375) was ended by Agha Salman, mere moments after England crossed the 700-run mark. Brook, meanwhile, notched up his maiden Test triple ton from just 310 balls to mark Test cricket’s second quickest 300.

Pakistan bowlers Naseem Shah (2-157) and Saim Ayub (2-101) fought back with some late wickets for the hosts, but they ended up conceding a huge 267-run advantage to England.

Up against a 267-run deficit, Pakistan lost opener Abdullah Shafique for a first-ball duck to Chris Woakes. His new ball partner Gus Atkinson also delivered the early breakthroughs for England by getting rid of Shan Masood and Babar Azam in quick succession.

Saim Ayub also made his way back to the sheds for just 25 after Ben Duckett claimed a sensational running catch off Brydon Carse as Pakistan slipped to 41-4. A few overs later, Carse knocked over Mohammad Rizwan for just 10 before Jack Leach deceived Saud Shakeel at 82-6.

At the precipice of a huge innings defeat, Agha Salman (40*) and Aamer Jamal (27*) will resume the second Pakistani innings at 152-6 in 37 overs, as they still find themselves another 115 runs away from England.
