India Women finally displayed some urgency to secure a 82-run gigantic victory over Sri Lanka Women in the 12th fixture of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. Team India dominated with an all-round show from the bat and ball, whereas Sri Lanka crumbled in the 173-run chase to get bowled out for just 90 runs.

Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and elected to bat first, and India openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana stepped out with aggressive intent to put 41 runs on the board in the powerplay. Smriti slammed India’s first six of the tournament in her 50 off 38 balls stay at the crease. 

However, before the openers could cause major destruction, Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu sent back both Verma and Mandhana in successive deliveries to slow down the pace of the game.

While Sri Lanka breathed a sigh of relief with openers wickets, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur came set from the dugout. Coming off from a neck injury, Kaur slammed a blazing 52 off just 27 balls, including 8 boundaries and a maximum. Kaur’s finishing touch helped India post 172 runs on the board, which was quite significant given the tournament’s trend of producing low-scoring games.

The pressure of the 173-run chase led to Sri Lanka’s humiliating fall. Renuka Singh struck on her second delivery to dismiss Vishmi Gunaratne off a duck. Substitute fielder Radha Yadav grabbed a stunner for a change. The momentum completely shifted in India’s favour when Shreyanka Patil deceived Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu with an over-spun delivery that carried an outside edge to Deepti Sharma at first slip. 

The next batter in, Harshitha Madavi, went for a big drive off Renuka’s fuller delivery. However, due to bad timing, she edged it to wicket-keeper Richa Ghosh, leading to Lanka’s third wicket in the powerplay.

The top order collapse demoralised the Sri Lankan batting unit as the middle-order fell apart under pressure. Asha Sobhana and Arundhati Reddy got six wickets in total to bowl out Sri Lanka for just 90 runs, thus securing a massive 82-run victory.

With that, India boosted their NRR from -1.217 to +0.576 and reignited semi-final hopes. On the other hand, Asian Champions Sri Lanka remain winless in this Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 edition.
