The much-anticipated first Test match between India and New Zealand has gotten off to a frustrating start as persistent rain in Bengaluru has delayed the start of play at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. With the weather forecast predicting intermittent rain throughout the day, the chances of completing a full day’s play appear bleak. 

The city has been experiencing heavy rain over the past few days, resulting in waterlogging in several areas and impacting both daily life and the teams’ preparations. Both India and New Zealand were forced to cancel their practice sessions on the eve of the Test as rain continued to lash the city. The start of the opening day has already been affected, with covers firmly in place on the ground, and the toss getting delayed. The first session has also been washed out to persistent rain and with no signs of rain fading out soon, it promises to be a long delay.

The weather forecast indicates that rain is likely to continue for the next few days, raising concerns that the Test match may face additional interruptions. It is important to mention that , the Chinnaswamy Stadium, however, is equipped with one of the best drainage systems in the country. 

The sub-air drainage and aeration system could expedite the resumption of play if the rain lets up, allowing the ground to dry out swiftly. Yet, with rain expected to return periodically, hopes of achieving a full quota of 80-90 overs in a day are slim.

The opening day of the first Test match between India and New Zealand has been delayed due to persistent drizzle and overcast skies, with weather forecasts indicating that the rain is likely to intensify as the day progresses. AccuWeather.com reports suggest a cloudy sky with a 41% chance of rain, predicting that thunderstorms (25%) may also disrupt play later in the afternoon. 

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an ‘orange’ alert for Bengaluru, warning of heavy rainfall. With rain likely to persist through the day, the probability of achieving a full day’s play is likely not possible. Even if the showers ease, a thick cloud cover of 100% is expected, which may further impact visibility and complicate play.
