West Indies launched their T20 series campaign with a confident five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the first match of three T20I series held at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on October 13. Chasing Sri Lanka's competitive total of 179, the visitors reached the target with five wickets in hand with significant contribution from and impressive batting display from openers Brandon King and Evin Lewis.

West Indies Triumph Over Sri Lanka In Series Opener

After being asked to bat first, Sri Lanka set an aggressive tone. Kamindu Mendis and captain Charith Asalanka powered the hosts to 179/7 in their allotted 20 overs. Mendis contributed a solid 51, anchoring the innings, while Asalanka added a quickfire 59 off just 35 balls, that included several well-timed boundaries that kept the scoreboard ticking.

In reply, the West Indies top order came out firing, with Brandon King and Evin Lewis taking advantage of the powerplay. King, in particular, looked in scintillating form, as he scored a brisk 63 off just 33 balls, including six fours and three sixes. Lewis complimented him with an equally quick 50 off 28 deliveries, that established a strong foundation for the chase.

The duo put up a rapid opening partnership, putting Sri Lanka on the back foot. Despite Sri Lanka’s bowlers managing to break the opening stand and slow the scoring rate in the middle overs, the West Indies batters maintained their composure. The middle order chipped in with valuable runs, ensuring the team stayed on track for the target. Captain Rovman Powell finished off the chase, steering his team home in 19.1 overs.
